Workshops

Brazilian Drumming:
Involves learning rhythms and songs from Northeastern Brazilian traditions. Participants will learn to play several different instruments and their respective parts, sing simple traditional songs in Portuguese and Yoruba and follow conducting leads. There are parts appropriate for every skill level and no one is left out. (all ages)

African Drumming:
From the rich drumming cultures of the Malinke people of Guinea and surrounding countries students will learn the complex rhythms and song of a specific community ritual. Djembe hand-drums are used along with bass drum set called Dunumba to create a beautiful polyrhythmic interaction. (age 12yrs and up only)

Samba Bateria Drumming:
The frenetic traditions of Rio Carnival Samba are a uniquely complex and loud drumming style that produces an acoustic sound system capable of large crowds. The parts to be learned in this workshop require some drumming experience and willingness to learn, ideal for a group of drumming and music enthusiasts. (age 12 and up only)

Afro-Brazilian Dance:
A revitalizing dance that mimics the day to day of ancient African activities and rituals. The steps progress from very simple to complex. Body motions are beautifully unique and work with rarely used muscles in round movements. Participants will learn to appreciate dance and culture, be exposed to Black History and get a full body workout. (Recommended 8yrs and up)

Capoeira:
An Afro-Brazilian martial art based on music and dance. Capoeira explores self-defense movements that intertwine in a fluid dance spectacle. Unlike other martial arts capoeira is also a form of vigorous exercise. Participants will learn defense and attack movements, stretching and physical conditioning as well as clapping rhythms and singing Capoeira songs. (Recommended 6yrs and up)

Mask/Costume Design:
Creation of costumes for carnival parade. Working with recycled fabrics, paper and other materials each participant will create a simple carnival costume to parade with, and take home. (All ages)

Instrument Building Shop:
Using accessible recyclable materials participants will learn to build a unique Afro-Brazilian percussion instrument to play and take home. Some time will also be devoted to learning how to play the instruments. (All ages)
